What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
This scheme is open in England and Wales.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government scheme that provides upfront grants to help reduce the cost of installing heat pumps and biomass boilers in homes and non-domestic buildings.
The scheme is installer-led. Installers who are MCS certified can apply for and redeem Boiler Upgrade Scheme vouchers on behalf of property owners.
Property owners considering installing a heat pump or biomass boiler can apply to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme through an MCS certified installer to help reduce the upfront cost.
Applying for a grant
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides grants to the value of:
£7,500 off the cost and installation of air-to-water heat pumps, ground source heat pumps and water source heat pumps
£2,500 off the cost and installation of air-to-air heat pumps for residential properties only
£5,000 off the cost and installation of biomass boilers
£9,000 off the cost and installation of air-to-water or ground source heat pumps in eligible off-gas grid properties (available from 21 July 2026 until 31 March 2027)
Now there’s no payment towards installation as the grant can cover all the costs for tenants and owners.
